The village of Ashby St Ledgers lies close to the A461 Daventry Road in Northamptonshire, about half way between Rugby and Daventry. Ashby St Ledgers is an attractive village with a long history. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Ascebi (Ash tree settlement). During Norman times a church was built and dedicated to St Leodegarius, from which the modern day name St Ledger's is derived. The manor was originally gifted to Hugh de Grentemaisnil by William the Conqueror and passed through several owners before passing to the Catesby family in 1375. It was briefly confiscated in 1485 following the execution of William Catesby, one of Richard III's counsellors, after losing the Battle of Bosworth. The manor was later returned to his son George. It is perhaps most famous, however, for its part in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. It was centrally located for the plotters and this led to Robert Catesby using it as the 'command centre' for the plot. The Gatehouse, where the conspirators met is now in desperate need of restoration. Other attractions in the area include The Rugby School Museum only about six miles away. Visitors might also enjoy a trip to the local village pub 'The Olde Coach House Inn'.
