The small town of Thrapston is the headquarters of the East Northamptonshire district. The population of the town is rising steadily and was estimated to be approaching 6,000 in 2006, over 1,000 more than in 2001. In 1205 the town was granted a Market Charter, in return for two palfreys (a type, as opposed to breed, of horse that was highly prized in the Middle Ages). Every year the high street is closed and the people of the town get together to commemorate this event with the town's charter fair. The Parish Church of St James was built in the 13th Century originally. Many other buildings in the town date from the 16th and 17th Centuries. A number of streets of brick terraced housing from the Victorian period can be found to the south of the High Street. There are also several listed buildings on the north side of Huntingdon Road which are enhanced by the Peace Memorial Park across the road. Sir John Washington, brother of George Washington's Great Grandfather, lived in Thrapston. The church of St James contains a stone tablet bearing the arms of Sir John Washington. It is believed that the stars and stripes of the American flag were originally taken from this coat of arms.
