The little village of Titchmarsh – its population around the 500 mark – is set in gentle Northamptonshire countryside just a mile or so north of the A14 near Thrapston (junction 14 leads you straight there). Drivers seeking to escape the traffic and garage food will find a village shop and a couple of pubs here, The Dog and Partridge with a garden hidden away at the rear. A stroll around the grassy-verged village reveals some decidedly picturesque cottages, many built in the grey or cream limestone quarried locally, and several with quaint thatched roofs – the old almshouses near the church certainly merit more than a glance. And that church – of St Mary the Virgin - is one of the prettiest village churches found outside Norfolk and Suffolk, its tower an absolute gem of 15th century architecture. Outside the village, to the west, there is a bird sanctuary and heronry. Stop off in Titchmarsh and you’ll join a list of notable visitors and residents, who include Samuel Pepys who attended a wedding at the church; gunpowder-plotter Robert Keys; poet-laureate John Dryden whose boyhood was lived here; and the eponymous gardener who recently presided over the opening of the village shop.
