Holyhead is located on the north eastern side of Holy Island on the shores of the Irish Sea near its junction with St George’s Channel and is separated from Anglesey by a narrow strait. Holyhead appears to have been used as a port by the Romans who traded a great deal with the Ireland during the time of Agricola. From an early stage in its history then Holyhead was a port and in 1848 the Holyhead railway was opened and this further contributed to the success of the town as goods could be exported and imported from the UK to Ireland and beyond through the port facilities. Today Holyhead Harbour covers 260 hectares with a breakwater some 1.5 miles long that was originally constructed in the 19th century. Holyhead has one of the largest deep water sheltered harbours on the west side of the UK and caters for around 8,500 ferry and large shipping movements every year. It is the most important fishing port in North Wales recording annual fish landings worth circa £3m. Holyhead is currently benefiting from a substantial investment programme which will see further improvements to this busy and cosmopolitan area, Holyhead Marina is being increased in size and there are further improvements planned for the town centre with its Victorian market hall. If you’re still feeling energetic then a visit to South Stack Lighthouse will certainly prove exhilarating.
