The town of Dereham (the prefix East lately dropped) is situated some twelve miles to the west of Norwich on the A47. Dereham is the archetypal Norfolk market town, a place to breathe in the character of rural East Anglia, an experience that can be deepened with a visit to the Norfolk museum of rural life at Gressenhall two miles outside Dereham. Established in Saxon times by Withburga, daughter of the ruler of Anglia, King Anna, Dereham was from the outset a religious centre, with a nunnery at its heart. It became an important place of pilgrimage after the miracle of the deer which, it is said, came to the nunnery every day during a famine to give their milk to the community. The town sign shows the huntsman who set his dogs on the deer, just before he met his end, struck from his horse by providence. Saint Withburga’s body was stolen by monks, the grave immediately yielding a spring with healing properties. This spring can still be seen in St Nicholas’s churchyard. The church built in the 7thcentury was razed by the Vikings, so the current version is largely Norman, with 13th and 14th century additions. There is an elegant 16th century bell-tower separate from the main building. After terrible fires in the 17th and 18th centuries few ancient buildings remain. A notable exception is Bishop Bonner’s Cottages, now the town museum, chocolate-box pretty, whitewashed and thatched, with beautiful pargeting. The spacious market place, surrounded by many splendid Georgian houses, has narrow streets leading from it worth exploring, several leading to snug little yards. And where would a Norfolk town be without a windmill? Dereham’s, at the quaintly named Dumpling Green, is typical of the area, and the town has made the most of it by turning the site into a picnic spot.
