Nine miles north of King’s Lynn just off the lovely A149 North Norfolk coastal route, Snettisham is one of the quieter and least commercialised villages in the area, and unlike neighbours such as Burnham Market has not yet been colonised by those fleeing London. There are modern holiday parks along the seaward side of the A149, but the village proper is a lovely spot with its feet firmly in the 14th century, evidenced by two structures dating from that era, St Mary’s church (albeit much restored in later periods) and the delightful Rose and Crown Inn, everyone’s whitewashed vision of a country pub. To complete the picture of the idyllic village there is a lovely Elizabethan Hall in the centre, and a spacious village green that doubles as cricket pitch. Many buildings in the village are constructed in the local carrstone, whose ferrous content gives the properties the colour that gives rise to their local nickname of gingerbread houses. St Mary’s is a spectacular example of (unusually for Norfolk) the decorated style of church architecture, its spire rising 175 feet to dominate the landscape around it, perhaps acting as a beacon for the tens of thousands of geese homing in on the nearby RSPB sanctuary every winter. Geese and visitors alike benefit from the sheltered location of the village, west facing over the Wash and so largely protected from the biting east winds that cut through much of the county’s coastline.
