Thorpe Market is a very small village on the edge of Poppyland, about three miles from the resort of Overstrand. For such a small place the village has good communications, standing as it does on the A149 coastal road that starts in Yarmouth and runs all the way through North Norfolk to King’s Lynn. Somewhat improbably it still has a railway service through Gunton Station a mile from the village proper – sited for the convenience of Lord Suffield, a major investor in the East Norfolk Railway, near his residence, Gunton Hall. Gunton Hall’s rather grandiose gateway tower, built in 1838, has been restored over recent years. What was the shooting lodge for the Hall is now Elderton Lodge Hotel, which enjoys a fabulous deer park setting. The village’s other Hotel, Green Farm, has even more history behind it, dating from 1510. The elegant flint and red brick Tudor building (with striking chimneys typical of the best of that era) was once a monastery. Lord Suffield’s mark is also on the church, dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch, which he had built where a church constructed in the Middle Ages stood previously, just as it is on the village pub, The Suffield Arms near the railway station. Depending on your point of view St Margaret’s, started in 1796, is either a wonderful and rare example of Georgian church architecture in the “churchwarden gothic” style, or a misfit in a county of elegant medieval religious buildings. More or less symmetrical and tower-less, it is at the very least interesting. More easily appreciated perhaps are the two old almshouses on the village green.
