| Events in Aldwych | 10 Places to Stay

Aldwych has been a home to London theatre since the street was first built at the turn of the 20th Century, although there are plenty of other attractions for the visitor to explore in and around the area. Situated just a short walk from the Thames, Aldwych is bounded on the west by the market stalls, shops and zany street entertainers of Covent Garden and on the east by Fleet Street and the edge of the City. It had been decided from the outset that Aldwych would be a centre for the performing arts. At the end of the 1800s, a major redevelopment of the area around Wellington Street, the Strand and Fleet Street had destroyed a great deal of London's old theatreland. Aldwych, one of the new roads, was earmarked for a pair of matching theatres on either side of a wonderful hotel. The Waldorf Theatre (later renamed the Strand, the Whitney and, recently, the Novello) opened in 1905, quickly followed by the Aldwych Theatre. The enduringly elegant Waldorf Hotel was built between them three years later. Nearby is the disused and reportedly haunted Aldwych tube station, a favourite location for film, TV and video shoots, and private parties.
