Bloomsbury captures much of what's wonderful about London. Despite its central location, it's blessed with numerous green squares where one might well stop a while to breathe in the atmosphere of the area. Bloomsbury has an age-old literary tradition. Charles Dickens lived at various addresses here, and his Doughty Street home, with personal effects and even a lock of his hair, welcomes visitors. The Bloomsbury Group of writers and artists, a progressive set including EM Forster and Virginia Woolf, met locally in the early 1900s, and poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath married at St George the Martyr church, Queen Square, in 1956. In Bloomsbury, the British Museum - the world's oldest - is the custodian of two million years of history, exhibiting priceless items such as the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone and many quite unforgettable Egyptian mummies. Less internationally renowned, but fascinating, is the Foundling Museum, detailing the career of Thomas Coram who provided for orphans in Georgian times. His memory continues in Coram's Fields, a children's playground where adults cannot enter alone. Bloomsbury is also famous for its educational and medical establishments, and it's close to the shops and nightlife of Tottenham Court Road, Euston and Holborn.
