For many years, the ancient agricultural village of Camberwell was a favourite holiday spot for people wishing to escape the bustle of the City of London or to tend their illnesses with what were believed to be healing waters from a local spring. In 1842, Felix Mendelssohn - visiting relatives - was so charmed by the countryside scenery that he composed the piano piece "Camberwell Green", which later became loved as "Spring Song". Things changed in the 1860s, with the advent of the railways producing a rapid increase in population. Nowadays, this is a busy, multicultural district in the London Borough of Southwark and the village green - once the scene of a rural annual fair - is surrounded by streams of traffic. Camberwell remains a predominantly residential area, with many Victorian houses and some excellent Georgian homes, including the birthplace of politician Joseph Chamberlain, to be admired. It's known for its artistic tradition, containing both the Camberwell College of Arts and the internationally celebrated South London Gallery which has exhibited Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Gilbert & George. Camberwell, birthplace of poet Robert Browning and home to countless film, TV and pop luminaries, has been immortalised in novels, operas and songs.
