Canary Wharf, with its towering buildings, is the most dramatic and recognisable addition to London's skyline in recent years. This huge development has already become a booming business area with international companies, financial institutions and media groups taking up residence alongside malls, shops, bars, restaurants, health and sports clubs, cinemas, theatres and hotels. It's a buzzing and thoroughly contemporary district that has plenty of greens, gardens, landscaped parks, promenades, squares and free open-air musical performances to ensure an agreeable environment for working, shopping and socialising. Equal care has been lavished on the design of the buildings, including Britain's tallest, One Canada Square, whose aircraft warning light at the summit, flashing forty times a minute, is a familiar sight to Londoners. Together with HSBC Tower and Citigroup Centre, One Canada Square is the centrepiece of a glittering group of skyscrapers visible from many parts of the capital and, indeed, Kent. There are great expansion plans for Canary Wharf, which opened in 1991 and now occupies 97 acres of land across the site of the old West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. There are good transport links by underground, bus, railway and air for the district's visitors and 80,000 workers.
