The east London district of Canning Town, located on the north of the Thames, is looking forward to a promising future. Back in Victorian times, it was a marshland slum. As Charles Dickens observed in 1857, "Canning Town is the child of the Victoria Docks", a place where poor housing was constructed for labourers toiling at the docks, the Bow Creek shipyard and the local coal wharves. Later, World War II brought a concerted bombing of the area, and in post-War years, the community struggled with unemployment and deprivation. Now things are changing rapidly, thanks to a £2.5 billion regeneration boost for Canning Town and the neighbouring Custom House. This coincides with the ongoing developments in nearby Docklands - London's most exciting new business and residential area - and with Newham, the local authority, spring-cleaning for the 2012 Olympic Games. Big business is already moving in: the ExCel exhibition and conference centre, and its attendant luxury hotels, are located in Custom House. Bow Creek, meanwhile, has been transformed by a Green Flag-winning ecology park, now incorporated into the vast Lee Valley Regional Park. Old traditions are upheld at Rathbone Market, a traditional East End market dating back to 1253.
