Johnny Speight
Born in Canning Town, LondonBorn on 2nd of June 1920
Died on 5th of July 1998
Speight became a comic scriptwriter after jobs as a milkman and insurance salesman among others. He supplied material for the likes of Frankie Howerd, Morecambe and Wise, Dickie Valentine and Max Wall, but it is for the sitcom Till Death Us Do Part that began in 1966, and its central character Alf Garnett, that he will long be remembered, Alf’s bigotry a brilliant way to satirise the racist attitudes even more prevalent then in this country than they are now.
