Chingford, in east London, is bounded to the north and east by Epping Forest and the Essex border, and to the west by the River Lea and King George's Reservoir - a popular centre for sailing and birdwatching. Chingford originated as a group of villages which expanded and became absorbed into suburban London after the advent of the railway in 1873. In the 1950s, the grassy Chingford Plain provided an enjoyable day trip for Eastenders living without gardens. Today, the Plain offers horse-riding tracks and is also home to the local model flying club. Chingford has a number of listed buildings, and its landmarks include Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, which dates back to 1543, and a granite obelisk erected at Pole Hill in 1824. Part of Pole Hill was owned by Lawrence of Arabia in the 1920s, and Chingford's association with the famous has continued ever since. In the Fifties, Walt Disney visited the miniature railway at Ridgeway Park. Years later, David Beckham attended school in Chingford and honed his football skills in nearby playing fields. Visitors can retrace his footsteps following the council-promoted Beckham Trail. Meanwhile, London's notorious Kray twins are buried in a family plot at Chingford Mount Cemetery.
