Clapham is an extremely desirable area in south-west London. Not only is it surrounded by the many attractions of Brixton, Battersea, Wandsworth, Streatham and Balham but it also possesses a timeless charm and vibrant lifestyle that in recent years have encouraged an influx of young professional people - and a steep rise in house prices. From the late 1600s to the early 19th Century, Clapham was populated by wealthy families living in fine country houses, some of which still survive. In the 1900s, with the upper classes moving out to pastures new, it became the suburban heartland of the regular "man on the Clapham omnibus". That man continues to live happily alongside the more affluent newcomers, and the residents, regardless of income, age or culture, flock together to enjoy the enduring pleasures of Clapham Common. Here are 200-plus acres of grass, woodlands, gardens, play areas, sports facilities, the biggest bandstand in London (constructed in 1890) and ponds providing for fishing, sailing and model boating. After dark, the streets bustle with nightlife which includes theatre, cinema, bars and restaurants catering for every taste. Clapham is well served by London Underground and railway stops including Clapham Junction, reputedly Europe's busiest train station.
