The fun and colourful Covent Garden is one of the capital's most popular destinations among visitors and Londoners alike. It's located on the site of the age-old flower, fruit and veg market, which moved in 1974. At the heart of Covent Garden is an Italian-style piazza and two markets selling food, antiques, curiosities, arts and craftwork, clothes and novelties. The piazza is lined with bars, restaurants, cafés, clubs - and the London Transport Museum (which reopens in November 2007). This is the only place in London licensed for street entertainment, and shoppers are delighted to stop and enjoy the mime and statue artists, musicians and jugglers. Historically, Covent Garden was the first venue to stage a Punch and Judy show, noted by diarist Samuel Pepys in 1662. The central square is surrounded by small streets with intriguing shops. Some seven narrow roads converge on the Seven Dials junction with its sundial column. Busier thoroughfares such as Neal Street offer fashion and footwear stores, while Neal's Yard - a bustling hideaway - sells organic food and body products. The Royal Opera House and the Cambridge Theatre fall within the limits of Covent Garden, which itself edges on the theatre districts of Leicester Square and the West End.
