Edmonton, in north-east London, enjoys a waterside location. It's bounded to the east by the River Lea and the vast stretches of William Girling Reservoir, a popular venue for sailing and birdwatching, which in turn links to King George's Reservoir - both Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Edmonton was once an agricultural village that expanded with the arrival of the railways in 1872. Today, two conservation areas preserve nostalgic sights such as the medieval All Saints Church, with its green, open spaces, and a variety of 18th and 19th Century buildings. Lamb's Cottage, a timber-framed Grade II-listed house dating back to 1680, carries a blue plaque to commemorate writers Charles and Mary Lamb, who lived there in the 1830s. Regrettably, the Tudor mansion at the heart of Pymmes Park was destroyed during the Second World War, although visitors may still enjoy its ancient walled garden within fifty acres of grass, walkways, lakes, sports grounds and children's play areas. Served by several railway stations, Edmonton is a favourite destination for golfers who can play on the Lea Valley Park Range course while their families explore the adjacent leisure centre. It incorporates a 12-screen cinema, restaurants, sporting facilities and a caravan park.
