Forest Gate is a suburb in east London's borough of Newham and the place where Epping Forest once swept down to its southern limits. This part of the forest has since been cleared, although pockets of trees remain in Wanstead Flats, a neighbouring grassland which is one of several places claiming to be the real-life Itchycoo Park of the Small Faces' 1967 hit single. Forest Gate is hardly one of London's glitzier districts, and so its celebrity links may be surprising: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jimi Hendrix are among its distinguished former inhabitants. Mainly residential, Forest Gate is home to the Woodgrange Estate, a conservation area consisting of handsome Victorian houses, and the northern part of Green Street, a popular, colourful jumble of multicultural shops and eateries, passes through the area. West Ham Park, meanwhile, provides residents and visitors with relaxing walks and sporting opportunities. With the fashionable Docklands on its doorstep and central London easily accessible, Forest Gate - along with the rest of Newham - is looking forward to a bright and busy future as the borough prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Games, combining the traditional East End spirit and hospitality with shiny new shops, hotels and entertainments.
