Hendon, in north-west London, has long been associated with flying. Pioneering British pilot Claude Grahame-White founded the London Aerodrome in Hendon in 1910. It was later taken over by the RAF and today houses the Royal Airforce Museum, displaying more than 100 full-size planes including the famous Spitfire and Lancaster Bomber. Also on the old Aerodrome site is a Metropolitan Police training college. The history of Hendon is preserved in many of its buildings. St Mary's Church, despite its restorations, dates back to 1080, and its surviving Norman font is still used for baptisms. The church also contains a monument to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who founded Singapore in 1918. The adjacent Greyhound, a traditional English pub, was once used as a church building. The district's rural past is captured at the Church Farmhouse Museum, a Grade II-listed 17th Century building with period rooms. Visitors may also step back in time at Hendon Hall, a dramatic Georgian house now operating as a hotel. Other local attractions include Hendon Park, which holds a green flag and combines Edwardian formality with contemporary sporting facilities, and West Hendon Playing Fields. Hendon is close to the M1 and within 20 minutes of central London.
