Lewisham is a lively multicultural neighbourhood, and an important transport hub, in south-east London - and it's set to benefit dramatically from the 2012 Olympics. Council authorities view the borough, also called Lewisham, as a gateway to the Games, taking place across the river in Newham. And so they are embarking on a series of improvements that include a complete redevelopment of Lewisham town centre with new shops, restaurants, bars, houses and offices plus a park and a town square. The aim is to make the district more attractive to residents and visitors, and more competitive. The plans safeguard the much-loved Lewisham Market, which currently operates in a pedestrianised section of the High Street, selling flowers, fruit and veg from Monday to Saturday and cupboard goods on Sunday. This is a busy retail district with chain stores, independent shops and a major shopping centre. Lewisham also hosts an exciting nightlife and various family destinations: the Lewisham Park gardens and playground; a tenpin bowling and amusements complex; and Ladywell Leisure Centre offering swimming, a gym and a fitness suite. Other attractions include the Limelight Gallery for art exhibitions and performances, and the Arthouse, providing studios and galleries for local artists.
