Mortlake is a riverside area of south-west London that's famous for two great pleasures: boats and beer. This is where the famous Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race ends, with a stone post marking the finish line. The post is also used a boundary in other important rowing competitions. Spectators may treat themselves to a lager as they watch the action on the water - and those same pints might well have come from the local Stag Brewery. Positioned on the Thames, the brewery is leased to the company that manufactures Budweiser. Less cheerfully, Mortlake is widely known for its crematorium, and for a cemetery containing the extraordinary tent-shaped mausoleum of Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton. However, in its more distant history, back in the 1600s, Mortlake was celebrated for producing exceptional tapestries, and one of the old manufacturing buildings, Suthrey House, survives at the riverside. This part of the Thames is characterised by a mix of industrial works, elegant 18th and 19th Century houses with enviable gardens, and narrow alleyways leading from the towpath back into the town. Visitors will love exploring the neighbouring districts of Kew, Richmond, Kingston upon Thames, Barnes and Putney, which are filled with fine scenic attractions.
