Trafalgar Square houses some of the capital's best-loved attractions. It has also traditionally functioned as a gathering place for celebrations, festivals, special events, vigils and protests. Although the famous pigeons have all but deserted the square since it became an offence to feed them, there is still plenty to see. The Grade I-listed Nelson's Column - a column and statue commemorating Admiral Nelson's victory in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar - rises proudly after a recent refurbishment, surrounded by fountains and guarded, as ever, by four enormous bronze lions. Each corner of the square has a plinth, with three holding bronze statues. The fourth plinth was empty until 2005 when it was launched as a showcase for a succession of modern art works. Some of the world's greatest paintings are on show at the Grade I-listed National Gallery, occupying one side of the square, and the National Portrait Gallery in St Martin's Place. Another of the square's landmark buildings is St Martin-in-the-Fields church, dating back to 1726. Trafalgar Square gives access to Strand, Charing Cross Road, Whitehall and The Mall - the ceremonial route to Buckingham Palace and the location of the ICA, a leading centre for art and culture.
