Victoria is best known as an important transport centre with coach, underground and mainline rail stations - and it's the terminus for romantic journeys on the world-famous Orient Express. However, this busy area has other attractions. The Apollo Victoria, a former cinema built in art deco style, is one of London's largest theatres, now staging musicals. The Victoria Palace theatre also specialises in musicals. It's famous for a golden statue of ballerina Anna Pavlova on the rooftop dome, replacing the original statue which mysteriously vanished after being taken down for safekeeping when war broke out in 1939. Outside the theatre, the Little Ben clock tower, modelled on the Big Ben tower, is always set an hour ahead of GMT. Victoria is also home to the awe-inspiring Westminster Cathedral, with its Byzantine-style architecture. Just a little further afield, the Metropolitan Police headquarters still displays its familiar revolving New Scotland Yard sign. For a spot of retail therapy, visitors might try Cardinal Place, a major new shopping centre bringing together all the popular high-street shops plus restaurants, a garden and a gallery. Victoria is within walking distance of some great royal buildings such as Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace and Clarence House.
