The up-and-coming district of Wood Green, in north London, has two big attractions. One is Alexandra Palace - and the other is shopping. The Palace, created for public recreation in 1873, has undergone rebuilding and much renovation after suffering two serious fires. The first television broadcasts, by the BBC, were transmitted from here in 1936. Today, the Palace combines stunning Victorian architecture and wonderful views with the latest technology to cater for conferences, exhibitions, banquets, weddings and private parties. Visitors are welcome in the bars, the ice rink and the Palace's 196 acres of parkland complete with boating lake, playing fields, animal enclosure and conservation area. For a spot of retail therapy, the newly revitalised Shopping City complex, dominating the High Road, is just the ticket, comprising all the major high-street shops, a market hall, restaurants and a multiscreen cinema. Wood Green caters well for culture with a variety of art galleries, an annual Literature Festival, the Wood Green International Short Film Festival, founded in 2002, and a regular programme of exhibitions and events at The Chocolate Factory, a creative community including artists, musicians, film-makers and photographers. Golfers, meanwhile, can enjoy a relaxing 18 holes at the Muswell HIll Golf Club.
