1903 - 1966 - English writer.

Read modern history at Oxford. First novel was Decline and Fall (1928). Became a Roman Catholic in 1930, regarded this as the most important event in his life. Spent years travelling in Guyana, Brazil, Morocco, Ethopia, Hungary and Mexico. Junior officer during WWII when he published four books including Brideshead Revisited (1945). Later books included The Loved One (1947) and The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold (1957). Regarded as a great comic novelist. Published first volume of his autobiography in 1964, never completed.
