The rural location of Stallingborough belies its proximity to the industrial development along the Humber just a short distance north of the village. Sited on the B1210 between Grimsby and Immingham, closer to the latter than the former, and the dualled A180 only a couple of minutes away, Stallingborough is easy to access – it even has a train station, though the service is not too frequent, and Humberside International Airport is roughly 10-minutes’ drive west. When the Domesday Book was written Stallingborough was a significant local centre, later granted a market and fair during the reign of Henry III; depredations during the Civil War, and action by the local squires who enclosed ancient common land in the mid-18th century, led to a decline in population. Today there may not be a market, but the settlement has good amenities for a village: the 3Ps - pub, primary school and post office - but also an elegant little Georgian church and an equally elegant hotel whose thatched building dates from the same period. Two sites here give snapshots of moments in Stallingborough’s history: the earthworks showing where the medieval manor stood; and tucked away in woodlands a gun emplacement used for protecting the Humber from naval attack in WWI, and from aerial bombardment in WWII. Rather easier to spot, and more picturesque, is the 1875 windmill now a private home.
