Sitting on the southern edge of the city of Leicester, Wigston spreads over several distinct settlements, the largest being Wigston Magna, then the more recent South Wigston, a product of the railway age and the development that accompanied it, and edging west towards the Warwickshire border the far smaller Wigston Parva. The town has an ancient history, being mentioned in the Domesday Book, and was noted in medieval times for possessing two large churches, something which at one time gave it the name Wigston Two Spires. As used to be the case with much of Leicestershire the production of stockings and gloves was once the major occupation in Wigston, a fact celebrated by its museum dedicated to framework knitting. Wigston has its own shopping centre and two supermarkets in easy reach, and in South Wigston a train station with services into Leicester, which these days is where many from the town work. With junction 21 of the M1 and its entry to the M69 only a couple of miles away it also offers an easy commute to other major centres in the region such as Nottingham, Northampton and Coventry, and is easy to reach for those travelling from elsewhere in England.
