Around 8 miles south of Lancaster lies the small village of Cockerham – according to historians the name Cockerham means “village by the winding river”. The River Cocker runs close to the settlement whilst Cockerham Marsh is located to the west of the Cockerham Channel and is today a designated SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) famed for its population of natterjack toads. It is a favoured location for those who enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside with its network of paths and bridleways and is within easy reach of the Lune Estuary. Cockerham was home to Cockersands Abbey. This was a Premonstratensian (a religious order of canons founded by St Norbert at Premontre in France around 1119) Abbey founded in 1190 and called St Marys in the Marsh, eventually it became one of the wealthiest house in Lancashire until Henry VIII disposed of it and its lands during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Today Cockerham still relies on the agricultural industry to sustain itself but more so than ever before tourists are discovering this little peaceful village nestling here in the countryside.
