Educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Curate and then rector at Eversley, Hampshire. Novels Alton Locke (1850) and Yeast (1851) had enormous influence at the time. Christian Socialist. Involved in schemes at improving lives of the working classes. Wrote number of popular songs and ballads. Appointed canon of Westminster and chaplain to Queen Victoria.
