Thurnham is a small hamlet south of the River Lune in the County of Lancaster and is actually in two parts – Lower Thurnham and Higher Thurnham. Set amidst the rolling countryside Thurnham has been a farming community since its earliest settlement. Thurnham is more precisely located south of Lancaster on the coastal road close to the charming fishing village of Glasson Dock, Historic Lancaster and the Trough of Bowland. In the 12th Century the lands around were owned by the Thurnham family and these were later passed to the Dalton family in whose ownership it remained until 1861. Of particular note is Thurnham Hall the family residence that also passed to the Daltons and remained in their ownership when the Dalton lineage ended. Set on a hill overlooking the settlement. The hall has today been fully renovated having been all but destroyed in a fire in 1959. Today one can see the magnificent Tudor fireplace, admire the Elizabethan friezes, oak panelling and armorial windows, enjoy a leisurely stroll up the stone Jacobean staircase and along the galleries which will take you to the Pele Tower (a fortified tower that was only occupied in times of trouble) Due to its unique location Thurnham is well placed to enjoy the surrounding countryside and moors.
