This ancient market town straddles the River Avon and owes its existence to the river. The settlement was established there over 2500 years ago. The name Bradford is said to have been derived from 'Broad Ford' as it the river was forded at the point now marked by the Town Bridge, one of Bradford-on-Avon's principle attractions. The Normans built the first stone bridge here, possibly replacing an earlier wooden structure. However, the Normans didn't add a parapet and people kept falling off the bridge into the river! The bridge was later widened by the addition of a further stone structure alongside it. If you venture under the bridge you can still see the join. At some point a chapel was added although this was later used as a lock up for town drunks and troublemakers. The Normans also left their mark in the shape of the ancient Church of the Holy Trinity. Before they arrived the town had also been the site of a roman villa which was later re-discovered on the site of St Laurence playing fields. The restored Tithe Barn at Barton Farm has one of the largest stone roofs in Europe.
