Landford is at the edge of the New Forest and was once surrounded by woodlands that were part of the Royal Forest estate. Although a prehistoric pathway crosses the parish of Landford at its south-west corner there is no firm evidence of a settlement here before the Iron Age. The Domesday Book of 1086 indicates a village had begun to flourish with around 20 or 30 people living in a scattered settlement. Today Landford finds itself just off the busy A36, near the Wiltshire border with Hampshire, in an area of mixed farmland and woodland. The old village church fell into such disrepair that a subscription was raised for its replacement and the new church of St Andrew was consecrated in 1858. Parts of the old Norman stone arch and some wooden beams were incorporated into the later building. The village has always prospered due to the the quality of the local land and so many fine houses have been built around Landford. However, it wasn't until 1989 that the village got its first licensed premises when the Landford Poacher opened its doors. The pub is still serving food and drink there's now a saxophonist playing jazz on a Wednesday night!
