The town of Mere in Wiltshire lies in the southwestern corner of the county, close to the border with Dorset. It is about five miles to the north of the town of Gillingham in Dorset and is bypassed by the A303 trunk road, which gives accessibility to many other parts of the south and southwest. The word Mere is very common as an element in English place names, normally meaning a broad lake or marches. Mere in Wiltshire is at the extreme southwestern tip of Salisbury Plain. The town has an old market square (unfortunately no longer in use for markets), a chiming town clock and a 15th century church, the parish church of St Michael. If you are looking for refreshment or somewhere to stay in Mere, you could try the Walnut Tree Inn. Alternative pubs are The Butt of Sherry, The George and the historic Old Ship Inn. Mere makes a great base for visiting Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset. It is within easy reach of Longleat House (famous for its Safari Park), Thomas Hardy Country, Stonehenge and the cathedral city of Salisbury. Every year the Mere Literary Festival is held in the town, starting on the second Monday in October.
