Stourhead is a magnificent country house and estate situated in the picturesque English county of Wiltshire, close to the town of Mere. You can find it by taking the A303 to Mere and coming off at the Mere Bypass. From here you take the B3092 past the turning for Stourton, taking the left turn at Stourton Lane, which takes you to Stourhead. Stourhead is a world famous Palladian mansion, filled with Georgian treasures. It also features an equally famous 18th century landscaped garden. The Stourton family had owned the estate for 700 years before selling it on. The Hoare family, who purchased the House in 1717, filled the grounds with many interesting and curious temples (such as the Temple of Apollo), designed to show the education and wealth of the family. On one hill overlooking the gardens is the folly 'King Alfred's Tower', which commands the most spectacular views. The television series 'Thunderbirds' used a miniature replica of Stourhead as the residence of 'Lady Penelope'. You can buy farm produce from the estate at the Stourhead Farm Shop. Meats and cheeses are produced on the farm to the highest possible welfare standards, assured by the RSPCA's freedom foods scheme.
