Maidstone, the county town of Kent, is in the heart of the 'Garden of England', with countryside of fruit orchards, towns and villages with a wealth of historic buildings and memories. Halfway between Dover and London, served by motorways M25 and M2, Maidstone is an ideal stopping place to visit. Maidstone now a heart of commerce, once a market town, still has open market at Lockmeadow on Tuesday and Saturday. The Chequers Centre, offer covered shopping with easy parking, compliments the local street shops catering from departmental stores to local shops and services. A further shopping experience is about to be built that should make Maidstone the leading place to shop in the South East. Motorists are encourage to use the Park and Ride bus that has been in operation successfully since the late '80s. In addition to shops, restaurants range from traditional to themed bars, which are also open till late at night. Multiscreen cinema, ten pin bowling, night clubs and theatre offer evening entertainment. Sited on the River Medway, Maidstone still reveals its past with historic buildings such as the Archbishops Palace with features dating from the 14th century, Tyrwhitt-Drakes museum of carriages. An example of 17th century pargetting can be seen on a building in Bank Street. The Museum and Art gallery is a fine place to see Maidstone's history. Mote Park with over 500 acres of public open space, lake, pitch and putting green and Leisure Centre is a good place to exercise or just sit and watch the swans. Closely are found numerous villages and attractions such as Cobtree museum of Kent life and Leeds Castle - reputably the loveliest castle in the world. It is no wonder that Maidstone sees many shoppers and tourists especially from Europe in the summer.
