An area famous for the extent of the wetlands habitat, the Romney Marshes is an area on the South Coast of England, between Folkestone and Winchelsea. Over time, the marshes have changed, risen and fallen, to their current form, ranging from the large shingle expanse of Dungeness to the small ponds and drainage ditches of the surrounding fertile farmland. Due to it’s diversity of flora and fauna, the area has received numerous wildlife designations and both national and international recognition. Much of the area lies below sea level but sea defences and walls protect it. The Marshes are a stronghold for wildlife and flowers such as the nationally scarce Marsh Mallow, an attractive plant once used to make confectionary and which also supports the equally rare Marsh Mallow Moth, which can be seen in just one other locality in the UK. The infamous Marsh Frog, originated from Hungary when Edward Percy Smith introduced just 12 into a garden pond in Oxney in 1932. The species quickly spread to the whole of the Marshes, where its characteristic croaking has earned it the name ‘the laughing frog’. Once famous for smuggling, the area ‘s beaches are now a favourite with windsurfers, sailors and other water sports enthusiasts and the majority of the sandy beaches are safe and ideal for families.
