St Nicholas-at-Wade is a peaceful village on the Isle of Thanet, dominated by a handsome flint church which dates back to the early 13th Century. The church is dedicated to St Nicholas, giving the village the first part of its name. The addition of "at-Wade" refers to the fact that the Wantsum Channel, which in ancient times separated Thanet from mainland Kent, could be crossed on foot from St Nicholas during low tides. This is a pleasant village with an endearing sense of its own history. The Bell Inn, one of two locals, dates from Tudor times, and the oak-beamed cottages, some surviving from the 17th Century, add to the atmosphere. Indeed, the village has been eulogised in a song - "St Nicholas-at-Wade" - by Royden Barrie and Kennedy Russell. Residents uphold the age-old tradition of "hoodening" (performing short plays in pubs to raise money for charity), and they ensure that Father Christmas, bearing gifts, makes his annual visit on December 25 on a pony-drawn sleigh. The village has little shopping, but Sarre is just a mile away, and neighbouring Monkton has a nature reserve and an observatory, both worth a visit. This is splendid walking and cycling country.
