Westerham is a very attractive small town with a wealth of trees and gardens, medieval and Georgian buildings, richly historic houses and lovely outlying countryside that's included in many recommended walking and cycle routes. The village green, surrounded by some memorable old houses and shops, is noteworthy for statues of Sir Winston Churchill and General James Wolfe, both having local connections. The 17th Century, gabled Quebec House was Wolfe's childhood home, now filled with significant exhibits and open to the public. Wolfe was baptised at Westerham's ancient St Mary's Church, and three of Churchill's grandchildren were splashed at the same font. Churchill and his family lived just outside Westerham at Chartham, an extended Victorian house, until his death in 1965. Here, visitors may wander round rooms containing many of his belongings and enjoy stunning garden views over the Weald and the South Downs. Also worth visiting are Squerryes Court, a 17th Century manor house in delightful grounds, and Charts Edge Gardens with ten acres of magnificent displays that have been celebrated by TV and in garden guides. Situated close to Kent's border with Surrey, Westerham is only a few miles away from the bigger shopping centres of Sevenoaks and Croydon.
