On the border of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire is the market town of Royston, lying just west by 1 minute 27 seconds of the Greenwich Meridian and housing a Weather Station. It is the crossing point of two ancient roads, Icknield Way and Ermine Street, marked by Roisia’s Cross dating from the times of William the Conqueror and still present today. Beneath this monument a cave in the shape of a bell was discovered in 1742, it is carved from chalk, is believed to be unique and there has been much speculation about it’s origins and use, although possibly the Knights Templar used it in the 13th century. The museum was first established in 1856 but has moved location within Royston several times, presently residing in the old Congregational Church Schoolroom. It’s vast collection of artefacts from this historically rich location is highlighted in a chronological tapestry. It also includes Laurence McGowan's splendid Royston Charger, commissioned to commemorate the start of a new millennium. There are a good selection of pubs and restaurants and a choice of places to stay from B&Bs to The Old Bull Inn, an 18th century coach house that is now a hotel.
