Situated on the London to Cambridge train line, Sawbridgeworth has been described as “one of the best small towns in the county”! Close to Harlow, in the East of Hertfordshire it prospered due to the maltings industry. The River Stort runs through the town and facilitated this industry but now provides pleasant walks and the riverside maltings have since been converted into an antiques store. The 13th century church spire of Great St Mary’s looks down on the town centre that is a conservation site of Georgian/Victorian buildings, home to 6 pubs and good restaurants. Accommodation is varied from hotels to B&B and the Welcome cottages. The parish church is believed to pre-date the Doomsday Book in the 11th century and previous to that evidence points to there having been a pagan worship site. Perhaps more famously, Beckingham Palace is on the outskirts of Sawbridgeworth. Owned by David and Victoria Beckham and with the estimated value of £7 million. There is a large Adventure Playground here, offering indoor play facilities for toddlers to teens with an aerial runway, slides, ball pools and the like. There is an outdoor activity garden too, picnic area, café and much car parking. To relax there is the Manor Of Groves Hotel Golf & Country Club with swimming pool, gym, Jacuzzi, various spa treatments and an 18 hole championship golf course.
