Stansted Airport is in the Uttlesford district of Essex and is London Stansted Airport yet is 30miles from the capital city. Originally an R.A.F. and U.S. Army airfield in World War II and used as a maintenance and storage depot by the R.A.F. from 1947 but with a short period of use in 1946 as a P.O.W. camp. Many World War II Nissen Huts are in use at Stansted, however presently for various non-military purposes. It is a BAA passenger airport and has been since 1966, with one runway providing internal, national and international flights. The terminal building was designed by renowned architects/engineers Foster Associates and opened in 1969, the layout of the airport is designed to provide an unobstructed route for passengers, of which there were 21.9 million in 2005. There is a railway station below the terminal building, providing frequent services to London, Cambridge and the Midlands. There is a bus station next to the terminal building and parking of either long or short stay, on and off site, is widely available for those accessing the airport from the M11. The closest accommodation is The Chimneys GuestHouse at Stansted Mountfitchet and The Cottage guesthouse at Birchanger, both within 15 minutes of the airport building.
