Mentioned in the Domesday Book the town of Aldershot has a long history much of it associated with the British Army. It was around the mid 19th century that Aldershot was first chosen as a location for the British Army, and virtually overnight the sleepy village of Aldershot became the thriving hub of the British Army. The army took over large areas of land in and around Aldershot and the military community started to grow at a phenomenal rate. How great a change can be seen in the population statistics for the area, in 1851 the population was recorded as being at around 870 and by 1861 the population was in excess of 16,000. As with all changes in life this was met with some resistance however the benefits that this brought to the town were undeniable, new buildings were erected, a frequent visitor was Queen Victoria and such was the importance of the town it attracted important visitors from all over the Commonwealth ensuring that Aldershot became synonymous with military excellence. Today the military still have a presence in the town and the building very much reflect the Victorian era with its range of architectural gems. Once again Aldershot is going through a period of change and whilst change is sometimes treated suspiciously it is felt that here with the right initiatives that Aldershot will again become a thriving and popular location.
