Chandlers Ford lies 7 miles south west of Winchester and 5 miles north east of Southampton. The area was once covered in woodland, heathland and water meadows, criss-crossed by many rivers and streams that drain into the Solent. As the woodlands were cleared farms developed joined by trackways, including an old Roman road which connected Winchester with Nursling (north of Southampton), that crossed these streams by fords, hence the last part of the town`s name; who Chandler was is still a mystery. The old Winchester road has now been superseded by the M3 which runs a little to the east. During the 16th century two large estates emerged to work the land, the Manor of North Stoneham and Hursley Park Estate, each building workers cottages so gradually building the communities which became Chandlers Ford. The village`s location, roughly halfway between Southampton and Winchester, made it an ideal place to live, away from the city strife, and was a regular stopping point for stagecoaches. The village continued to grow and in 1897 became an independent Parish with a population of about 1000. By the 1930`s it had swollen to over 3000 and in 1932 Chandlers Ford joined Eastleigh & Bishopstoke Urban District. Chandlers Ford consists of several distinct areas each with it`s own character and is now a conurbation of some 20000 people.
