The village of Selborne is located in Hampshire and is famous because of one Gilbert White, an 18th century naturalist who wrote “The Natural History of Selborne” in which he recorded his observations on local animals and wildlife. Today Gilbert White’s house and gardens are open to the public and provide an interesting insight into the character of the man. Within the house can also be seen the Oates Museum, this is dedicated to Captain Lawrence Oates who was part of that fateful polar expedition lad by Captain Scott. Close to the centre of the village is the Church of St Mary’s, an original Saxon church containing two magnificent stained glass windows and within its grounds is the grave of Gilbert White himself simply marked GW 26 June 1893. Gilbert though did not just leave his magnificent book and house for future generations to enjoy – he also left the famous Zig Zag path which, as its name suggests, leads up the hill in zig zag fashion to Selborne Hanger and provides some excellent views across the Hampshire countryside. A visit to Selborne would be incomplete without a trip to the Selborne Arms, dating back to the 1600’s and timber framed it offers visitors a great welcome.
