Situated close to Southampton Water in Hampshire the town of Totton is also partly located in the New Forest National Park and the ponies from the park used to wander around the streets of Totton until the 1950’s. Tracing its history back to the Iron Age, artefacts have been found at nearby Tatchbury Mount Iron Age Fort, the town today is a busy town that due to its unique location has had a long association with the sea. Evidence of this is still available for all to see today at the Eling Tide Mill, the only working tide mill in the UK and that can trace its heritage back some 900 years. Shipbuilding was also undertaken here and today, because of the towns proximity to the sea it is still involved in boatbuilding but on a much lesser scale! The high street today has a wide range of local shops and if you want to delve a little further into the history of the area then a visit to the Totton and Eling Heritage centre will prove useful with its star attraction of a bronze age dagger. Close to the New Forest and within easy reach of the undulating Hampshire countryside – it is no wonder that Totton is a popular location to live.
