Basildon is located in south Essex. It was designated as a New Town after World War II in 1948 to accommodate the expanding London population. Basildon was created from four small villages; Pitsea, Laindon, Basildon and Vange. The Basildon district was formed in 1974, and includes two neighbouring towns, Billericay and Wickford, as well as rural villages and settlements in the surrounding countryside. The town centre boasts many High Street chainstores and independent local retailers. As well as shops and coffee houses in East Walk there's the added advantage of Eastgate Shopping Centre, home to over 100 retailers, including one of the largest Debenhams stores in the UK. Further outlets can be found at Westgate Shopping Park. There’s also a market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, clothing and household goods. A significant number of residents commute to London, and the town has excellent transport links by both rail and road. Located in the north of the town is the Festival Leisure Park. It includes several restaurants, a bowling and arcade centre, two hotels, a twelve screen cinema, two premium health clubs. Festival Leisure Park is affectionately known locally as Bas Vegas Just a short stroll away are the 250 acres of Gloucester Park. The park is home to the town's main swimming pool, an athletics ground, cricket and football pitches, a bowling green, tennis courts and a fishing lake. Countryside walks can be enjoyed in over 450 acres of nature trail beginning at Dunton Hills in the south-west corner, continuing through the woodland of Lincewood to Marks Hill and finally to Willow Park. Langdon Hills Country Park is another popular attraction, as is the Wat Tyler Country Park at Pitsea. The park boasts the National Motorboat Museum, a Marina, art and craft shops, Tudor houses and a miniature narrow gauge railway.
