Chipping Ongar is just one part of the town of Ongar, but is the common name used for the whole town, found in the Epping Forest district of Essex. Ongar was an important market town in the medieval period, lying at the centre of a ‘hundred’. The market started in the 12th century and the market place is still visible as the widest part of the High Street. The Old Market House on the High Street once housed the market in the 1840's. The oldest surviving building in the town is St. Martin's Church, which dates from the 11th century. The White House and Castle House are the largest houses in the town and date from the 16th century. The town became known as Castle Ongar in the 12th century because of the "motte and bailey" castle, the remains of which still survive. The town is known for Ongar tube station, the most north easterly on the London Underground until closure of the single track Epping to Ongar section in 1994. The line now operates a 1950s vintage diesel train on Sundays and some holidays. The North Weald Airfield Museum is found in nearby North Weald, and was once the site of the Battle of Britain Fighters.
