Purfleet is in the borough of Thurrock, Essex. Chalk extraction, which took place from the 16th century onwards, left its mark on the landscape much of which is now a conservation area. In the reign of George III, Purfleet Garrison was built to service five Royal Gunpowder Magazines. Constructed in 1759, the five magazines and proof house were used to test, store and supply gunpowder to the army and navy during the Napoleonic wars. Four of the five magazines were demolished but No.5 and the proofing house is now a museum, Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre, which houses a wide range of historical artefacts and memorabilia and stages regular events and exhibitions. Purfleet was a popular Victorian tourist attraction and features in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula in which the famous vampire buys a house called 'Carfax' and lives in Purfleet. Research indicates that Stoker was probably a visitor to Purfleet prior to publishing his novel. In the late 1800's the Royal Hotel by the Thames was known as Wingrove's Hotel and was allegedly visited by Edward Prince of Wales who came to sample the famous whitebait dinners. Formerly the Van den Bergh margarine factory, Unilever UK Foods site is based on the River Thames at Purfleet.
