Rochford is a small town and civil parish in Essex, just to the north of the seaside resort of Southend on Sea. The parish of Rochford includes London Southend Airport. The Area currently occupied by Southend Airport was used as a fighter station in WW1. During WW2 Southend Airport was requisitioned by the Air Ministry for use as a fighter airfield for the No.11 Group RAF. The Market Square in Rochford has a varied selection of shops, cafes and businesses. Recreation needs are fully catered for with 3 golf courses in the district, and sports centres in Rayleigh, Hawkwell and Great Wakering Historic buildings include The Old House in South Street, and Rochford Hall, one time home of the Boleyn family. In 1525 Henry VIII awarded Thomas Boleyn the title of Viscount Rochford. The house is now privately owned by a family who live within the building, along with a golf course who also own a part of it. Nearby attractions include the market town of Rayleigh, the site of a Norman castle, and Rayleigh Windmill, built in 1798. Also within the district are the historic Hockley Woods, the island of Foulness - a haven for wildlife, and the Roach Valley Conservation Zone.
