West Mersea is a riverside town perfectly placed on the Island of Mersea which sits off the coast of Essex in Eastern England. Its location between the Blackwater River and the Coln Estuary led it to being chosen by the Romans for its strategic position in centuries past; today the town has grown to nearly seven thousand people. It's linked to the mainland by the Strood Causeway which from time to time is covered by water persuading visitors to check the times of the Tide. A stroll around this historical town will uncover a pleasing sandy beach and delightful Esplanade which has fine views and bracing sea breezes, nearby is the attractive church dedicated to St Peter which dates back to Norman times. From the ancient early settlers to invading Romans industry has thrived across the years from the production of ceramics to fishing for Sole, Skate and Herring which continues today, the Island is also renowned for its mouth watering oysters which grace the tables of many restaurants. There is an excellent choice of shops and a wide range of pubs, and for those who will be tempted to linger on the most easterly inhabited Isle of the British Isles will find small hotels, B&B's and caravan Parks to chose from.
